A room without a screen.

Designing one small space in your home that resists the feed.

A room without a screen.

You do not need a screen-free house. You need one screen-free corner, and it can be genuinely small: a chair, a lamp, a surface big enough for a mug and a book.

The rule is spatial rather than temporal, which is why it works. Time-based rules ask you to remember and decide. A place-based rule asks nothing. You sit in the chair, and the chair does not have a television pointed at it, so you read.

Furnish it for the hands. A blanket, a couple of books you are actually partway through, a notebook, a deck of cards. Everything in reach should be something you would enjoy picking up. Nothing in reach should have a charging cable.

Light matters more than people expect. One warm lamp at head height makes a corner feel like a destination; an overhead light makes it feel like a hallway.

Then protect it lightly. No enforcement, no family contract. Just the small, quiet agreement that this is where the phone does not come, and the growing evidence, over a few weeks, that the hour you spend there is the best one in the day.
